Both paths involve on-the-job training plus classroom instruction in plumbing codes, pipe systems, blueprint reading, and mechanical skills. Service plumbers command higher hourly rates than new construction plumbers because the diagnostic work is skilled and can't be templated.

   Earn Master Plumber License

   The master plumber license requires: 2+ years as a licensed journeyman plumber, passing the master plumber examination (more comprehensive than journeyman, covering business and contract law, advanced plumbing systems), and in most states, business insurance and bonding requirements. The master license is required to legally operate a plumbing contracting business, pull permits, and supervise journeymen and apprentices.
